Audioo a Finalist in Startup Battlefield @ TechCrunch Disrupt!

Hello from New York City!

I’m here @ the TechCrunch Disrupt conference and am excited to share the news that Audioo has been selected as a “finalist” to compete here in the “Startup Battlefield”.

We’ve been selected out of hundreds — and possibly thousands — of applicants to present to the nearly 2,000 attendees for a chance to win $50,000.

Read all about it here and here!

The competition is fierce and this truly is one of those things where we’re “just happy to be here”. But as the original Founder of Audioo, I’m extremely honored and proud!

Soft Launch of ReliefSearch

Some people may remember a “Tsunami Relief” fundraising effort I worked on ~4 years ago to generate funds for the Southeat Asian relief effort after the horrific tsunami/earthquake disaster. I launched a search engine at www.ReliefSearch.com, and proceeds from the pay-per-click ads went to the American Red Cross and Direct Relief International. (Ironically, I received a cease and desist from the Red Cross for using their name/logo on the site without permission, even though I was making a contribution to them!)

The original ReliefSearch was a very plain site with a search box that exclusively generated Pay-Per-Click (PPC) ads when a search was conducted. At the time, the general feedback was the lack of un-paid, “algorithmic” results contributed to a bad user experience.

Well, fast forward 4 years and I’ve re-launched ReliefSearch with a far better “user experience” that includes BOTH paid listings as well as unpaid listings from Wikipedia, Google, Blogger, YouTube, Flickr, Twitter, Delicious, etc. It’s essentially a meta-search mash-up.

The bigger play here is based on the premise that in the tough economic times, charities have a harder time raising money. So we intend to create customized “ReliefSearch” sites that are skinned/branded for any charity who wants to participate — XYZCharitySearch.com — and they can promote it to their audience. People will be raising money for their causes based on normal searching behavior with the charity earning revenues from the clicks on PPC ads.

I hope you’ll consider using www.ReliefSearch.com for your searching….and that you’ll help me spread the word! Please also reach out if you work with any charities who could benefit from their own branded search site. This can become a SUBSTANTIAL revenue machine for any organization who will actively promote a site to its constituents. This is a phenomenal new fundraising tool for cash-starved charitable organizations.

Where does Audioo fit in?

Just read about Voicetag on TechCrunch and it reminded me that we should be thinking about opportunities in 2009 to get more traction with Audioo. I welcome everyone’s input on where my “YouTube for audio files” service fits in, whether it’s related to FaceBook, iPhone, VoIP and/or other platforms.

TechCrunch: Fear Kills Businesses, Dead

Very relevant post by Brian Solis on TC. I couldn’t agree more that the doom-and-gloomers are getting more than their fair share of airtime, and while it’s smart to be prudent, getting irrationally fearful can cloud your judgment. That’s why I’m LOOKING at potential “distress” situations now — there are opportunities to acquire either operating businesses or valuable assets at very low prices! By infusing a little capital and competent management — so many businesses are run so incredibly poorly — I see this time as a special opportunity!

Oil below $34 a barrel!

Oil closed below $34 a barrel (on the NY Mercantile Exchange) on Friday 12/19 — lowest levels in ~5 years and nearly 80% off its highs from over the summer. The price of Brent North Sea oil, which is the most commonly referenced price, closed around $43/barrel. Amazing times!
