DOMAINfest

Spending a couple of days at the DOMAINfest conference in Hollywood this week. Interesting to meet folks who own just a handful of domains as well as individuals and companies with hundreds of thousands of names. Just like in the stock market and real estate market, there seems to be a lot of negative sentiment regarding the state of the domaining industry. If that’s the case, in the spirit of Warren Buffet’s “Be fearful when people are greedy and greedy when people are fearful”, my sense is the downturn is a BUYING opportunity for someone like me with a long-term approach.

TShirt Hell shutting down…But what a way to go out!

OK, so I’ll admit I’ve been a fan of the TShitHell.com website for years. Although I never purchased anything from the site — I did get one t-shirt as a gift from a friend with a similar sense of humor — I was on their mailing list and checked it out from time to time.

I was sad to read on TechCrunch that they’re shutting down in February, but I have to hand it to the owner — he’s going out in style! Here’s an excerpt from his goodbye message:

“So, to all the kickass motherfuckers who supported us and REALLY got what we were trying to do, thank you (no, not you, you racist idiots who thought we actually had racist intentions and no, not you, you dumb as a stump fucks who just think any shirt with the word “fuck” on it is as right as rain). Thanks to all the people who contributed to my vice fund and at the same time helped make a funny statement about the world today.

As a final farewell, I’m going to bring back some of the top selling Worse Than Hell shirts as a fuck you to those who forced me to remove them. To those who are offended by them and to those who think I’m racist, promoting rape, a nazi, homophobic or just the world’s biggest asshole…well, at least you think I’m something, which means I’ve achieved what I wanted.”

Back from Caymans

What a fantastic vacation! The Caribbean is always great, and my first visit to the Cayman Islands did not disappoint.

One other interesting note: We travel a lot, including internationally, and I can honestly say there was a different feeling on this trip returning to the U.S. knowing Barack Obama was our President.

OH BAH MUH!

What an amazing day in American history! Even though we’re in the Cayman Islands, I’m absolutely glued to CNN!

I’m proud to say I’ve been a fan since I first heard Barack Obama speak at the Democratic National Convention in 2004, and my prediction of his Presidential victory goes back to August 2007.

Happy New Year!

It was a cold and gray day here in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, so I spent the day reading rather than on the slopes. I read TIME Magazine’s “Person of the Year” coverage on Barack Obama and it left me highly optimistic that competent leadership, something we’ve lacked for a very long time in the United States, can lead to good things happening faster than people may expect.

The US economy is obviously deeply sick, but between the optimism Obama’s administration embodies, combined with the decline in energy costs, super-low interest rates, and the substantial stimulus package he’s promising, I expect a shift in consumer confidence sooner than many of the pessimistic reports that are dominating the headlines.

I wish everyone — friends, family, and business colleagues around the world (Canada, India, Peru, Philippines, Romania, and Ukraine) — a happy, healthy and prosperous 2009!
